Happy 2013 Birthday to Three Musical Superstars – Bruce Springsteen, Ray Charles, and John Coltrane

AppId is over the quota AppId is over the quota Aquarius Papers - Global Astrology: Happy 2013 Birthday to Three Musical Superstars – Bruce Springsteen, Ray Charles, and John Coltrane Aquarius Papers - Global AstrologyUsing Astrology, Spirit, and Archetypes to move and groove through the intersections of fate and free will.

Today we give a giant birthday shout out to these three legendary greats!

First,"the Boss." Bruce Springsteen (September 23, 1949) is one of the brightest lights if the huge musical Libra tribe that includes such greats as John Lennon, Paul Simon, Ray Charles, John Coltrane, Justin Hayward, Jackson Browne, and John Mellencamp. Bruce's tunes grab people all over the world, whether as social conscience or just great music. Today we have lots of great live performance videos!

I've been hip to Mister Bruce Springsteen and his music since the early 70s and “Greetings from Asbury Park,” and he puts on one of the most electrifying live shows anyone could even want to see! For your consideration, a happy birthday assemblage of some great performances.

From the beginning of his career, "Spirit in the Night" - Live in Los Angeles with the E Street Band, 1973.

A more recent version from Sacramento, 2008 of "Spirit In The Night."

Another major hit from his first album, later made a hit again by Manfred Mann and the Earth Band, "Blinded By The Light"

A great acoustic performance of "Blinded By The Light" from Oct 15, 2005 in Madison, Wisconsin.

A GREAT must see alternate version! "Blinded By The Light" A total groove out!

An early one! From 1978, live in Phoenix, Bruce and the E Street Band doing one of his first and greatest, letting the world know he was a musical force majure! “Rosalita” (let it buffer so it doesn’t stop and start)

An October 2009 performance from the Spectrum in Philadelphia, PA of "Rosalita,"

THE song that woke a lot of the world up! A great performance of "Born To Run" from The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA, on October 25, 1976.

Another great performance of "Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band at Memorial Coliseum, Phoenix, AZ, July 8th 1978. (Let it buffer for awhile or it'll stop several times in the performance.)

Here are two more great performances of "Born to Run," this one from Landover,MD, from November 24th 1980, and this one at Madison Square Garden, New York, from the All Star Benefit for the Homeless Children on December 13, 1987.

From the same album, here's a great performance of "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out" at the Capital Center, Largo, MD, on the 24th of November 1980.

Here's "Prove It All Night," another great turn from his early days.

From the same era, Bruce and the E Street Band doing the ever incredible "Thunder Road" from the 1979 No Nukes concert. Here's another magnificent performance of "Thunder Road" from 1976 (when he made the covers of Time AND Newsweek on the same week!)

Another of my favorites! This song gave me two of the best lines I’ve ever passed on to another human being! “Poor man wants to be rich, rich man wants to be king, and the king ain’t satisfied until he rules everything,” and “It ain’t no sin to be glad you’re alive.”

This is pure gold from the Barcelona 2002 concert. If you want to catch a glimpse of what it’s like at a Bruuuuuuuce concert, check out the crowd!!

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band – “Badlands” From the same show, the song that’s a declaration of hope and determination to take our destiny into our own hands! “Promised Land”

("Badlands" and "Promised Land" were the same two he did with Jackson Browne in Central Park at the 1982 Freeze Now! Concert after the march from the UN. A million people clocked in, making it the largest antinuke protest ever. I was a “peacekeeper” assigned to a section near the stage. When he broke into “Badlands,” a million people roared and stomped their feet and shook the Earth in a once in a lifetime experience!)

This one’s electrifying! From Bergen, Norway, in 2009, Intro & "Badlands"

Lest you think Barcelona has anything on the Brits, the crowd goes wild at Glastonbury in June 2009 as for the Boss cranks out a fantastic performance of “Badlands.” And from the same gig, “Thunder Road” When the crowd roars out the lyrics throughout the entire song, it’s some kind of statement!

Live in NYC in 2001, the awesome “Jungleland”

From the next chapter in his career, the awesome "No Surrender" by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band in Washington DC, 11th October 2004.

Here's Bruce doing "I'm Goin' Down" live in Camp Nou, Barcelona, 20th July 2008.

Two more great performances of the same song! Here's "I'm Goin' Down"live in Kansas City, 1984, and "I'm Goin' Down" in Frankfurt on 7 March, 2009.

As long time fans know, Bruce has deep feelings about our country and all that's right and wrong about it. Here he is doing the legendary Woody Guthrie song once proposed as the "true" national anthem for the US, "This Land is your Land" live at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, CA on September 30, 1985. I also found Bruce and another American icon and champion of the working class, Pete Seeger, doing "This Land is Your Land" at Obama's Inaugural fete.

A while back I did a post on "Chimes of Freedom," one of the most remarkable songs ever written by America’s bard, Bob Dylan. Here is an amazingly powerful performance by the Boss of this paen to freedom in East Germany in 1988 before the fall of the Berlin Wall! “Chimes of Freedom in East Berlin”

From the same tour, here’s Bruce in Copenhagen in 1988 offering us "Chimes of Freedom."

At some point, please take a moment to reread my post linked above, since I posted the lyrics, and after all, the Chimes of Freedom are flashing for all of us.

As a bonus, here's the original 7 minute studio version by Bob Dylan of "Chimes of Freedom"

Bruce once said, "blind faith in your leaders will get you killed." I found an unbelievable video of Bruce Springsteen doing "War" in 1985 at the LA Colliseum, and posted it, along with the lyrics, back in 2007 during a global protest of the Iraq war. Since that video has been cut short for some reason, I found the entire performance which I linked below.

I saw him perform this way back when, and it still grabs me by the throat. This is a message for everyone who needs to remember that in fact, "blind faith in anything will get you killed." For your eye opening enjoyment, here's the entire performance of the musical juggernaut, "WAR"

Here's another great performance which you should check out! Bruce performing "War!" live, along with the man who originally did it, Edwin Starr! And from “the Rising” tour, yet another performance of the ever-amazing and powerful "War!"

Here are a few more great tunes written by others, done by Bruce:

"Blowin' In The Wind/Bad Moon Rising"

"Who'll Stop The Rain" live in Stockholm 2009.

From the same concert, we move back into three of my favorite songs written by the Boss:

"No Surrender" & "Badlands" & "Night"

Here's more of his hits,

"Dancing in the dark" from Barcelona 2002

"Glory Days" from Dave Letterman's last night on NBC.

Here's Youngstown done live in Youngstown.

The song he says Patti Smith "stole" from him, in that she definitely made it a major hit on her own before Bruce's version, the awesome "Because the Night" from a 2007 European performance.

Here's his rocking version of the Gary U.S. Bonds mega-hit "A Quarter To Three" in Sevilla.

I found a few clips of Bruce with various friends doing other people's songs. These are some great performances, so check them out!

First, U2 & Bruce Springsteen live at the 2009 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame doing "I still haven't found what I'm looking for."

Here’s another great live video by these two doing this song at Madison Square Garden! Bono waxes philosophical about rock and roll, and what he says.... Bruce Springsteen and U2 performing “I still haven’t found what I’m Looking For”

Speaking of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions, here’s Bruce and Axl Rose at the 1994 ceremony inducting John Lennon as a solo artist performing John’s song "Come Together."

Here’s an awesome performance by Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen doing "It's my life."

We close this Happy Birthday celebration with a full on, entire concert video from August 1978 in Landover, Maryland. This one is a young man at his peak during his Saturn Return! For your enjoyment,

Bruce Springsteen Live in Maryland – Part 1 (2 hours)

Bruce Springsteen Live in Maryland – Part 2 (42 minutes)

For our first encore, we’ll fast forward 7 years to another full show, with a different set list than he was playing in 1978! For your enjoyment, from Paris in June 1985, an entire 3 hour show. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Live in Paris

For our second encore, Bruce joins Neil Young in 2004 doing one of my favorite tunes of all time, "All Along The Watchtower" in Minneapolis. Dylan wrote it, Hendrix did the definitive version, and Springsteen keeps it alive!

Thanks for being the voice of the working people all these years. I was once told that very few good things come from New Jersey, and that you were definitely one of them (along with Jon Stewart and a few more!) You've proved that true over the years. Thanks for the incredible tunes over the past 40 years! May you have many more as you rock on into your 60s!

*********

As I mentioned earlier, a very happy birthday goes out to two more great legends also born on this day, the awesome Ray Charles (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004). Ray took a variety of styles and took them over the top in his very unique way. Ray Charles was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century across many different genres of music. From Wikipedia:

He was a pioneer in the genre of soul music during the 1950s by fusing rhythm and blues, gospel, and blues styles into his early recordings with Atlantic Records. He also helped racially integrate country and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, most notably with his Modern Sounds albums. While with ABC, Charles became one of the first African-American musicians to be given artistic control by a mainstream record company. Frank Sinatra called Charles “the only true genius in show business...”

For your enjoyment, Mister Ray Charles! I found some videos of Ray Charles that span his career from 1963-1999.

First, here's Ray performing live in Sao Paulo, Brazil 1963 doing two of his early hits! Rock out with "What'd I Say" and "Hit The Road Jack."

A great b/w live performance of "You don't know me."

here is an electrifying performance by Ray Charles of "Let the Good Times Roll!" Wow!

For another great dance tune, from what looks to be the same show, Ray ripping out "What'd I Say"

Another live video of an early hit! "I Got A Woman"

From The Dick Cavett Show on September 18, 1972, here's Ray live doing "America The Beautiful." From the same show, "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "Georgia On My Mind."

Here's Ray in 1999 doing Leon Russell's masterpiece, "A Song For You."

We'll close this brief birthday tribute to the Amazing Ray with a clip called "The Giants Of Rock 'N' Roll" done live in Rome in 1989 featuring Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, BB King, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, James Brown, Fats Domino, and more! Enjoy this 8:49 of pure gold!!

*********

A big happy also goes out to the 'Trane Himself, the legendary John Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967). He pioneered several forms of jazz, was one of the most significant saxophonists in jazz history, and worked with the greatest of the greatest. He was so revered that he was actually canonized as a saint by the African Orthodox Church! Since I can't do an entire birthday tribute this year due to time constraints, here are a few videos I found of the Sax Master!

John Coltrane performing live in Belgium in 1965 playing "Naima."

From 1961, a great live performance of 'Trane with his quintet (Eric Dolphy on flute, Elvin Jones on drums, McCoy Tyner on piano and Jimmy Garrison on bass) doing "My Favorite Things"

Here's a live video from April 1959 of Miles Davis & John Coltrane performing "So What" From Miles Davis' album, "Kind Of Blue."

For your enjoyment, a 9+ minute live audio-only clip from 1958 of 'Trane and Miles at the Newport Jazz Festival doing "Bye Bye Blackbird"

Here’s a great 8+ minute video clip of ‘Trane and the great Wes Montgomery doing the Thelonious Monk jazz standard, “Round Midnight”

A live performance of "On Green Dolphin Street"

From Germany in 1960, a rare video clip of ‘Trane with Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb performing “Hackensack”

Here’s the John Coltrane Quartet in a rare 1965 video from France performing what is said to be the only live video of “A Love Supreme” and “Ascension” (it’s a 2+ minute promotional video for a 6 DVD set of that performance)

Since we just had the Equinox yesterday, I figure this one’s perfect for today! From 1960’s “Coltrane Sound” album, John Coltrane with McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums, and Steve Davis on bass performing “Equinox”

The 11 minute studio version of the incredible "Blue train."

If you want to hear the entire one hour 1957 studio album, here’s John Coltrane’s “Blue Train”

Here’s the entire 38 minute studio album from 1960, the first with all compositions written by JC. “Giant Steps”

Here’s the entire 1 hour 15 studio album from 1962! “John Coltrane Plays the Blues”

Here’s the entire 40+ minute studio album from 1966! “Meditations”

We'll close this birthday celebration with his 1958 11 minute studio version of "Stardust"

For our encore, a full one hour 36 minute “Jazz Icons” television clip! John Coltrane Live 1960, 1961, 1965

All three of these guys were/are awesome, and set the standard for the ages. There’s a lot more of their music over at you tube, so if you’re inclined, check out anything and everything these major league talents ever did. They definitely influenced music across several genres for decades, and are still among the most loved and respected in their styles.

Happy 2013 Birthday to the Immortal Groucho Marx

AppId is over the quota AppId is over the quota Aquarius Papers - Global Astrology: Happy 2013 Birthday to the Immortal Groucho Marx Aquarius Papers - Global AstrologyUsing Astrology, Spirit, and Archetypes to move and groove through the intersections of fate and free will.

In one of history's great ironies, two of the greatest beings of the 20th century were born on the same birthday, October 2. They both punctured imperialists and fascist thinking with every phrase they spoke, and each had an amazing sense of humor. A great example of the illumination power of the ridiculous and the sublime existing as one. Today we have some extraordinarily funny quotes!

In case you haven't figured it out yet, the "great Spirit," aka "Mahatma" Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948), and the great wit Groucho Marx (October 2, 1890 – August 19, 1977) are both Libras born on October 2! As I've told you before, even though they were born 21 years and worlds apart, they had some important astrological similarities. Both had very sharp wits, both punctured imperialists and fascist thinking at every turn, and each had an amazing sense of humor.

We owe a lot to these two guys who changed our world so profoundly in different ways. Of course, neither of them had much use for authoritarians or Fascists of any stripe, and it's interesting to me that they each influenced millions during the same era. I suppose great Souls incarnate to answer the need of their times.

Groucho was a wit unlike any before or since, and as much of a cultural icon as anyone who ever raised his eyebrow or smoked a cigar. This was a guy who gave us some of the most memorable lines in history. Today we have some very funny quotes, including a few from Duck Soup, Groucho's most scathing anti-war, anti-dictator movie. So to brighten your day through wit and wisdom (and some very funny lines) that are sure to make you smile, HEEEEEERE'S GROUCHO!

Groucho: Gentlemen, Chicolini here may talk like an idiot, and look like an idiot, but don't let that fool you. He really is an idiot.

Zeppo: General Smith reports a gas attack. He wants to know what to do.
Groucho: Tell him to take a teaspoonful of bicarbonate in half a glass of water.

Groucho: Do you realize our army's facing disastrous defeat? What do you intend to do about it?
Chico: I've done it already.
Groucho: You've done what?
Chico: I've changed to the other side.

Louis Calhern: I am willing to do anything to prevent this war.
Groucho: It's too late. I've already paid a month's rent on the battlefield.

Groucho: If you think this country's bad off now, just wait till I get through with it.

Groucho: Why, a four-year-old child could understand this report. Run out and find me a four-year-old child. I can't make head or tail out of it.

Edwin Maxwell : Sir, you try my patience!
Groucho: I don't mind if you do. You must come over and try mine some time.

Chico: I wouldn't go out there unless I was in one of those big iron things go up and down like this. What do you call those things?
Groucho: Tanks.
Chico: You're welcome.

*******

Here's more Groucho wit and wisdom courtesy of some of the funniest one liners ever created!

From later in his career, another of Chubby’s original hits. The Limbo was all the rage in the early 60s! “Limbo Rock”

From innocence to hard core blues, here's Stevie Ray Vaughan (October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990) in live performances doing several of his best! First, live from Montreux 1985, "Pride and Joy."

From there we go to "Texas Flood," followed by a great display of his "sharp as a knife" guitar licks on the Arsenio Hall Show in 1989 blistering out "Crossfire."

Here’s a great live version from Live at "Night Music", Los Angeles CA 1989 of SRV cranking out “Crossfire”

We'll close Stevie's segment with his tribute to the guitar Master Himself! Here's Stevie Ray Vaughan live doing a fantastic homage of “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)”

From 1987 in Tennessee, here’s another smoking performance of “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)”

And for those who just can’t get enough, here’s a 93 minute live concert of Stevie and Double Trouble! For your enjoyment, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble Live At Montreux

Eddie Cochran (October 3, 1938–April 17, 1960) was an American rock and roll pioneer whose career was way too short given his huge influence on rock music. His songs, especially "Summertime Blues," have been covered by thousands of bands, some of them the biggest in history. He “lived fast, died young, and made a good lookin’ corpse,” as it used to be said.

First, some great live film footage of Eddie in 1958 performing the iconic “Summertime Blues” (As a special treat, here's the classic performance by the Who at Monterrey Pop in 1967 of "Summertime Blues")

Here’s an amazing classic one hour live performance film created way back when! It features Eddie and his best friend Gene Vincent of “Be Bop A Lula” fame, cranking out that legendary early rock and roll classic. “Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran – Legends in Concert

From the movie “The Girl Can’t Help It,” here’s some great color footage of Eddie live doing his smash hit “Twenty Flight Rock” (this was the song Paul sang to John that got Paul accepted as a member of the Quarrymen.)

Workin’ the rockabilly formula, here’s Eddie in another live clip performing his hit “C’mon, Everybody”

From 1959, Eddie performing the Chuck Berry classic “Hail Hail Rock and Roll”

Also in 1959, here’s a great live performance of “Teenage Heaven”

Here’s live footage of Eddie doing a slow one in February 1959, “Have I Told You Lately that I Love You” From the same gig, “Money Honey”

Lindsey Buckingham (October 3, 1949) was THE guitar in the mid-70s to early 80s version of Fleetwood Mac. This guy plays breathtaking guitar, and I found some great live performances!

Here’s Lindsey and Fleetwood Mac live in Japan 1977 performing a tune he wrote to kick off the 1975 eponymous Fleetwood Mac album, “Monday Morning”

From April 1976 on the Midnight Special tv show, Fleetwood Mac live doing another LB tune he wrote with Stevie, “World Turning”

From the album Rumors, here’s a LB tune that kicked off that album! The video is lousy, but the sound is great! From 1978, Fleetwood Mac live cranking out “Second Hand News”

From 2009 in Pittsburgh, Fleetwood Mac in a great live video of “Second Hand News”

From 1977, live in Japan, Lindsey and the band offering up a great version of his song, “Never Going Back Again”

Here’s Lindsey and Stevie in an acoustic duet of “Never Going Back Again."

From Letterman, here they are again in 1998 doing "Landslide" and "Big Love"

In another acoustic gem from 2006, here's Lindsey live in Milwaukee doing "Trouble." From the same show, "Go Insane."

Live in 2008 at Bass Hall, “Big Love” and “Go Insane”

From here we go highly electric! Lindsey and his band in NY 2008 doing his signature tune, "Go Your Own Way." From the same show, another of his great tunes from his Fleetwood Mac days, "I'm So Afraid."

Here's Lindsey smoking with Fleetwood Mac! First, a 9+ minute awesome performance in Pittsburgh in 2009 by the band of “I’m So Afraid.” From that same year, this time in Paris, here’s another 9+ minute performance of “I’m So Afraid.” (his guitar work at times made my jaw drop!)

And lastly, from their live 1997 video "The Dance," here they are again doing "I'm So Afraid."

We'll close Lindsey's birthday tribute with his signature song! Here's da man with Fleetwood Mac in "The Dance" performing the incredible "Go Your Own Way." His guitar work is magical!!

For those who have been on a Moon of Neptune these past 12 years, India.Arie (October 3, 1975) is a Grammy Award-winning American neo-soul and R&B musician, songwriter, and producer. I couldn't find many live performances, but I did find a couple, along with original music videos of her better-known hits.

The music video of "Video"

The music video of "Little Things."

I found a live acoustic Live at VH1 performance of India.Arie doing her hit "I Am Not My Hair." Here's the original music video of "I Am Not My Hair."

From the same VH1 performance, here she is doing "Ready For Love."

We'll close this segment with India.Arie performing live in the studio doing the beautiful "Beautiful Flower."

*********

And now, last but never least, the great Gwen Stefani (October 3, 1969)! She began as the frontwoman for the ska technopop group No Doubt, and has split her time between the band and solo careers as a performer and fashion designer. For her birthday tribute, I couldn't find much live material, but quite a few music videos.

Here's Gwen and No Doubt in the music video of their mega-hit "Spiderwebs."

The music video of No Doubt doing "It's My Life."

The music video of No Doubt doing "Just A Girl."

The music video of No Doubt doing "Hey Baby."

The music video of No Doubt doing "Simple Kind of Life."

The music video of No Doubt doing "Don't Speak."

From her solo career in 2004-08, the music video of her major hit "Hollaback Girl."

The music video of "Wind It Up."

Here's the music video of her last solo hit, "The Sweet Escape."

So from the original Twister through a tragic blues guitar hero to an equally tragic rock and roll pioneer, from a guitar flashmaster through the voice of neo-soul to ska-influenced technopop, we have had some great talents born on October 3. If you're inclined, please go back over to you tube and enjoy whatever you like of these amazing Libra mega-talents. In any case, a big Happy and Merry Birthday to all of these first rate performers!

ps – Also send up a big Happy Birthday to Gore Vidal, born 3 Oct 1925, and the Mickey Mouse Club, "born" Oct 3, 1955. That show mattered if you were a kid back then. Also a highest respects and appreciation, very special Happy goes out to the great Western Arhat, Master of the Qabalah Paul Foster Case, born at 5:28 p.m., October 3, 1884 in Fairport, New York.

Yes, today would have been the 125th birthday of Dr. Marc Edmund Jones, Master Astrologer who gave the world the Sabian Symbols, the Jones Patterns, the Sabian Assembly, and a whole lot more!

I had the rare privilege of meeting Dr. Marc Edmund Jones (born 8:37 am in St. Louis, October 1, 1888–March 5, 1980) on several occasions near the end of his long and distinguished life. He was brilliant to the end, no nonsense in his approach to astrology, and no nonsense when it came to what he thought WE should and should not be doing and saying! Charming, but blunt and to the point. He had to be one of the tersest Libras I’ve ever met!

Happy Birthday 2013 to One of the Greatest Beings Ever to Walk the Earth, Mahatma Gandhi

AppId is over the quota AppId is over the quota Aquarius Papers - Global Astrology: Happy Birthday 2013 to One of the Greatest Beings Ever to Walk the Earth, Mahatma Gandhi Aquarius Papers - Global AstrologyUsing Astrology, Spirit, and Archetypes to move and groove through the intersections of fate and free will.

Every year we offer a huge Happy Birthday to a couple of the greatest who were both born on October 2. This year I’ve gathered so many memorable quotes from each that I’ve had to split the birthday celebrations. Groucho was first, and now it’s the Mahatma’s turn!

As I told you at the Groucho celebration, in one of history’s great ironies, the "great Spirit," aka "Mahatma" Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948), and the great wit Groucho Marx (October 2, 1890 – August 19, 1977) are both Libras born on October 2! Even though they were born 21 years and worlds apart, they had some important astrological similarities.

As I noted in the Groucho birthday post, both had very sharp wits, both punctured imperialists and fascist thinking at every turn, and each had an amazing sense of humor. Neither of them had much use for authoritarians or Fascists of any stripe, and it's interesting to me that they each influenced millions during the same era.

This was truly a remarkable duo who changed the world forever, each in their own way. I suppose great Souls incarnate to answer the need of their times. This is a perfect example of the illumination power of the ridiculous and the sublime existing as one.

He was one of the greatest to ever walk among us, a human who claimed his "god self" and became one of the best of all time. Gandhi was a truly remarkable man for the Ages, and showed the way to the High Road regardless of local circumstances. No less than Einstein had this to say about Gandhi:

Albert Einstein, one of the greatest minds humanity has produced, once said of Gandhi that "Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this walked the earth in flesh and blood." One of the most effective politicians in history, he demonstrated the practical truth that the way of applied Soul force using non-violent techniques is the most powerful political tool we have.

As I’ve noted before, though many think of him as a caricature of a kindly old man, or a hopelessly naive advocate for a non-violence believed impossible to achieve, Mohandas Gandhi, a.k.a. "the Mahatma" (Great Spirit) gave us all the only sane technique for restoring peace in our ridiculously divided and aggressive world. Today we take a new look at some of his great quotes, among them: "Gandhi was once asked what he thought about western civilization. His response was: 'I think it would be a good idea.'”

Gotta love anyone with that sense of humor. Today we have quite a few of his more memorable quotes that will serve as grist for the mill of your Soul, and the Soul of humanity and our world. Enjoy, and send up a moment of appreciation to one of the most remarkable men ever to walk this Earth.

Gandhi's 7 Deadly Social Sins: Wealth without Work, Pleasure without Conscience, Science without Humanity, Knowledge without Character, Politics without Principle, Commerce without Morality, Worship without Sacrifice

Democracy and violence can ill go together. Evolution of democracy is not possible if we are not prepared to hear the other side.

Hatred ever kills, love never dies; such is the vast difference between the two. What is obtained by love is retained for all time. What is obtained by hatred proves a burden in reality for it increases hatred.

You assist an evil system most effectively by obeying its orders and decrees. An evil system never deserves such allegiance. Allegiance to it means partaking of the evil. A good person will resist an evil system with his or her whole soul.

Nonviolence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man.

Whether humanity will consciously follow the law of love, I do not know. But that need not disturb me. The law will work just as the law of gravitation works, whether we accept it or not. The person who discovered the law of love was a far greater scientist than any of our modern scientists. Only our explorations have not gone far enough and so it is not possible for everyone to see all its workings.

However much I may sympathize with and admire worthy motives, I am an uncompromising opponent of violent methods even to serve the noblest of causes.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment.

Nonviolence and cowardice are contradictory terms. Nonviolence is the greatest virtue, cowardice the greatest vice. Nonviolence springs from love, cowardice from hate. Nonviolence always suffers, cowardice would always inflict suffering. Perfect nonviolence is the highest bravery. Nonviolent conduct is never demoralizing, cowardice always is.

Every murder or other injury, no matter for what cause, committed or inflicted on another is a crime against humanity.

Man's nature is not essentially evil. Brute nature has been known to yield to the influence of love. You must never despair of human nature.

It is the law of love that rules mankind. Had violence, i.e. hate, ruled us we should have become extinct long ago. And yet, the tragedy of it is that the so-called civilized men and nations conduct themselves as if the basis of society was violence.

Faith... must be enforced by reason... when faith becomes blind it dies.

And because it is one of my all-time favorites, here it is again:

Gandhi was once asked what he thought about western civilization. His response was: "I think it would be a good idea."

Here are three more posts with the Mahatma's wisdom:

Aum and blessings to you, Mahatma. May your Soul's message to us all grow stronger with each day that passes.

Happy 2013 Video Birthday to Cass Elliot, Bill Medley, and Paul Williams

Today we send out a Happy Birthday to two incredibly gifted vocalists and a great composer!

Cass Elliot (September 19, 1941 – July 29, 1974), of course, was THE VOICE in the Mamas and the Papas. She died way too young of a heart attack at age 32 in 1974 (NOT choking on a sandwich), but her powerful pipes left us some beautiful music for the ages. Today we have a few of her best!

From the Smothers Brothers show in 1968, Cass doing "Dream a little dream of me." Here's another great version in b/w of Cass doing "Dream a little dream of me."

Here are the the Mamas and the Papas at Monterrey Pop doing their iconic first hit that took the country by storm, "California Dreamin'."

Here’s a good clip pieced together from several performances of their iconic song, “California Dreamin’

At the Hollywood Palace in 1966, the Mamas and the Papas lip-synching their monster hit, "Monday Monday."

Here they are in 1966 doing the oh so soulful (and thought to be revolutionary at the time!) “Dancing In the Streets”

From 1967 on Ed Sullivan, here they are live doing their autobiographical hit “Creeque Alley”

Also from Ed Sullivan, here are the Mamas and Papas live with Cass out front, belting out “Words of Love”

Here’s one of Cass’ signature tunes, done in 1967 with the Mamas and the Papas, “Sing For Your Supper”

From 1968, a live performance of a great honky tonk arrangement of a tune originally written by John Lennon, "I Call Your Name."

You can hear here powerful soaring voice in other Mamas and Papas hits! Here are the original studio versions of:

“I Saw Her Again Last Night”

“Twelve Thirty”

“I Call Your Name”

“Dedicated To the One I Love”

From her post-Mamas and the Papas career, a special treat! Mama Cass, Mary Travers, and Joni Mitchell doing Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released."

Here’s a great medley of Cass with Tom Jones in a live video duet! From 1969, “One Night,” “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man,” and “I Guess I’ll Always Love You”

Also from 1969, very much live with her beautiful voice in full bloom, “Cass Elliot performing live on the Johnny Cash Show”

Here’s a hit for Cass in 1969 after she went solo! “It’s Getting Better”

From 1972, Mama Cass and Julie Andrews doing a great medley of Simon and Garfunkel songs! "59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy), Sounds of Silence, Mrs. Robinson, Scarborough Fair, Homeward Bound, Bridge Over Troubled Waters."

From the Midnight Special tv show in 1972, Mama Cass and John Denver doing "Leaving on a Jet Plane."

Cass solo live doing her hit "Make Your Own Kind of Music."

We'll close with a studio version set to still photos of Cass doing "Does Anybody Love You."

*********

Now we move to Bill Medley, the extremely soulful voice of the Righteous Brothers. One of the top groups in the 60s, Bill Medley (September 19, 1940) and Bobby Hatfield (August 10, 1940 – November 5, 2003) could send cold chills through your spine with their soaring melodies and harmonies! For your birthday enjoyment, here are the Righteous Brothers!

Here they are in b/w on Shindig doing their first major breakthrough, the Phil Spector produced blue eyed Soul monster hit "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling." Here they are again in 2003 at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions in great form doing "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling."

Live in 1966, here they are doing “(You're My) Soul And Inspiration." Here’s another live performance on Hullabaloo from 1966 of “(You’re My) Soul and Inspiration.”

From 1965, a great live performance of "Just Once In My Life."

Here they are on Shindig in 1964 doing a dynamite song that Bill wrote and Mitch Ryder rode into the top 20, "Little Latin Lupe Lu." Also from Shindig in 1964, the Righteous Brothers doing "Let The Good Times Roll."

I found a great 15 minute clip of several Righteous Brothers performances on Shindig! For your enjoyment, the Righteous Brothers live performing “Justine,” “Just Once In My Life,” “Little Latin Lupe Lu,” “The Night Time is the Right Time,” and a brief clip of “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” (in the segment of “The Night Time” they’re backed by the Blossoms and Darlene Love, the voice of the Crystals and “He’s A Rebel”)

Also from Shindig in 1965, Bobby and Bill live, backed by the Blossoms, doing 7 minutes of “Unchained Melody” and “Fare Thee Well”

For our finale, Bobby and Bill live in 1983 at LA’s Roxy Theatre! We start with “The Old Time Rock and Roll”

Also from the Roxy, “Soul and Inspiration” and “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’”

Want more? Here’s Bobby and Bill doing the Sam and Dave monster hits, “Hold On I’m Comin’” and “Soul Man”

Finishing this brief set at the Roxy, here’s a 15 minute medley of “Ebb Tide,” “Georgia On My Mind,” “Let It Be Me,” “Guess Who,” “Just Once In My Life,” and “Rock and Roll Heaven”

From 1981, doing a live performance of their final major hit, "Rock and Roll Heaven."

We'll finish Bill's birthday salute with 7 1/2 minutes of him performing live in 2006, led by a montage before the performances. Bill Medley live in Branson MO.

For our encore, we'll finish Bill's birthday salute with 59 minutes of the Righteous Brothers performing live. The Righteous Brothers – Legends in Concert

We close today's birthday celebration with a toast to the great Paul Williams (who is not the Paul Williams of the Temptations, nor the boxer, nor the rock critic!) From Wikipedia, Paul Williams (September 19, 1940) is "an Academy Award-winning American composer, musician, songwriter, and actor.... best known for popular songs performed by a number of acts in the 1970s including Three Dog Night's "An Old Fashioned Love Song", Helen Reddy's "You and Me Against the World", and the Carpenters' "We've Only Just Begun" and "Rainy Days and Mondays", as well as his contributions to films such as "Evergreen" from A Star Is Born and "Rainbow Connection" from The Muppet Movie." So here they all are!

I saw these guys back in the early 70s, and they put on an amazing stage show. With 3 lead singers, it was quite an experience! For your enjoyment, Three Dog Night live in 1975 doing Paul's composition, "Old Fashioned Love Song."

Here's Helen Reddy in a duet with Kermit the Frog doing Paul's song "You And Me Against The World."

Here are the Carpenters on MTV doing two of Paul's tunes. "We've Only Just Begun" and "Rainy Days And Mondays."

From "A Star is Born," the divine Ms. Barbra Streisand doing "Evergreen." Here she is again live on New year's Eve 1993, doing "Evergreen."

We'll close today's birthday celebration with a song sung by Kermit the Frog for The Muppet Movie. This was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song in 1979, when the single of this song reached #25 on Billboard's "Hot 100 Singles" chart. For your enjoyment, Kermit (Jim Henson) singing the Paul Williams composition "The Rainbow Connection."

I hope you've enjoyed this birthday blast through the past as we also join with millions pondering the global importance of International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Avast ye lubbers - time to celebrate! Arrrrgh......

Yesterday, while following the echoes of my mind, I remembered a song. It turns out the composer's birthday was September 23, so I figured better a little late than never.

Fenton Robinson (September 23, 1935 - November 25, 1997) was a blues cat you probably never heard of, but he wrote one of the most performed blues songs ever done. For your consideration, the 12+ minute studio version of a tune made famous by the great Boz Scaggs back in 1969, accompanied by Duane "Sky Dog" Allman on blistering lead guitar and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section,

"Somebody Loan Me A Dime." (It really begins to smoke about 7 1/2 minutes in, so check it out!)

I also found a great live performance by Boz doing "Somebody Loan Me a Dime."

Here's Fenton performing his signature tune live in Holland in 1984. For your enjoyment, a much more standard blues delivery of "Somebody Loan Me A Dime."

Thanks for the song, Fenton. It haunted my life for many years a long time ago. RIP.
